Types of Dental Prosthetics

Removable Dental Prosthetics

Removable dental prosthetics, also known as dentures, are very common, especially among older individuals. This type of prosthesis allows patients to regain functional and aesthetic normalcy during the day, and they can be removed at night to facilitate cleaning and maintenance. They are also generally a more affordable solution.

Removable dental prosthetics can come in different types. Depending on the patient’s needs, either skeletal (metallic) prosthetics or Valplast dentures can be used.

Skeletal Prostheses

The skeletal dental prosthesis is a type of removable dental prosthesis used to replace lost teeth, but with an internal metal structure, making it more resistant and durable compared to traditional dentures.

This prosthesis is called “skeletal” because it has a metal framework (usually made of chrome-cobalt alloys or titanium) that adapts to the shape of the mouth and supports the artificial teeth. The metal structure fits the gums and is held in place by hooks or devices that anchor to the remaining natural teeth, providing greater stability.

Valplast Prosthesis

The resin removable dental prosthesis or Valplast Prosthesis is an innovative and highly regarded option in the world of dentistry for patients who have lost teeth. These prostheses offer a unique and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, providing a more comfortable, flexible, and aesthetic alternative to traditional prostheses.

It is very important for the dental prosthesis to perfectly adapt to the tissues and shape of the jaws on which it rests, ensuring that it cannot move or detach from the gums.

Valplast® provides exclusive physical and aesthetic properties, as well as proven functionality, making it ideal whenever removable prostheses are being considered, whether partial, unilateral, or full, both upper and lower.

The adhesion offers greater comfort and stability in the mouth, its thickness of just two millimeters competes against the four or five millimeters of conventional acrylic. It does not alter with fluids, remaining stable over time, as it neither breaks nor cracks. Hypoallergenic and non-toxic, it allows us to use it for all patients in the already known cases.

Fixed Dental Prosthesis

A fixed dental prosthesis is a type of prosthesis that is permanently placed in the patient’s mouth, unlike removable prostheses, which can be taken out. The most common procedures are dental bridges, dental implants, and dental crowns.

Some of the main advantages include:

Stability and Comfort: They cannot be removed without the intervention of a professional, which increases their stability.

Aesthetics: They fit better with the shape of natural teeth and usually have a more aesthetic appearance, especially when ceramic or porcelain crowns are used.

Durability: Fixed prostheses are very durable and can last many years when properly maintained.

Prosthesis on Implants

A prosthesis on implants is a dental restoration that is attached to dental implants, which are surgically placed into the jawbone. This type of prosthesis is designed to replace one or more missing teeth, offering a stable and long-lasting solution.

The main types of prostheses on implants include single crowns, bridges, and full-arch restorations. Implants act as artificial tooth roots, providing a secure foundation for the prosthesis, and they offer several advantages:

  • Stability and Durability: Implants provide a strong foundation for prostheses, making them more stable and durable compared to other types of restorations.
  • Natural Look and Feel: Implant-supported prostheses mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, providing a more aesthetic and comfortable solution.
  • Preservation of Bone Structure: Implants help maintain the jawbone structure, preventing bone loss that can occur when teeth are missing.

Prostheses on implants are an excellent option for patients seeking a permanent and effective solution to replace missing teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Prostheses

When are removable dental prostheses placed?

When, at an advanced age, there has been degeneration and atrophy of the bone structure, when there is truly advanced periodontal disease, or when various traumas have damaged or loosened the teeth, various problems arise when performing basic movements with the jaw. If this happens, it is necessary to replace the affected teeth with a removable dental prosthesis. Dental prostheses in Madrid are primarily comfortable to wear and maintain. They will help you regain your smile and eliminate all the discomfort and pain you have suffered when chewing or speaking.

How are the Dental Prosthesis cleaned?

It should be cleaned at least once a day if adhesive is used to secure it to the gum, or after every meal. It should be brushed to prevent plaque buildup and stains caused by certain foods, and the denture should be soaked in a cleaning solution.

What are the advantages of removable prostheses compared to fixed ones?

They are cheaper than fixed dental prostheses.
They are easier to clean and maintain than fixed prostheses.
They are more adaptable. If in the future the patient needs to add dental pieces, it can be done on the existing structure.

What is the price?

The price range for a removable dental prosthesis is between €350 and €800, approximately.
This price variation depends on any complications that may arise during the treatment: for example, if dental extractions, additional crowns, or implants are required.
Price is also a factor that divides prostheses into two types. In this way, if the prosthesis is made of plastic, it will be significantly cheaper than if it is made of porcelain. In the case of porcelain prostheses, the cost can reach up to €1000 each.

How are they placed?

Removable dental prostheses are placed in 4 phases:

  1. An examination will be performed on the patient, and the conclusions will help us design the prosthesis and its fit to the jawbone. The dental technician takes charge of creating the actual shape of the provisional prosthesis based on the prototype.
  2. The patient tries the provisional prosthesis at the clinic.
  3. The definitive prosthesis is made with the necessary modifications and is placed on the patient.
  4. A final checkup where the patient is given guidelines for cleaning and maintenance.
